LANCASTER— If the Fairfield Union Falcons were attorneys, they’d be defense lawyers.
The Falcons’ defense held the Heath Bulldogs to just 90 total yards in a 22-3 win on Friday in the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division 4 Region 17 playoffs.
Heath (6-5) ran 15 times for just 26 yards and was 9 of 24 passing for 64 yards with an interception.
The Falcons recovered 2 of 3 fumbles they forced.
"We played well. We out-physicaled them for sure," said Falcons coach Andy Clark.
Fairfield Union (7-4) recovered a fumble at the Heath 4-yard line and quarterback Dean Clark scored on the next play with 5:14 on the first quarter clock.
Colin Pike kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 7-3 with 10:40 on the second quarter clock as Camden Montgomery kicked a 43-yard field goal.
But the Falcons went up 15-3 with just 2:54 left in the half on Colton Borah’s 2-yard interception return.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Falcons went on a 90-yard, 14-play time consuming drive that culminated on a 2-yard run by Clark with 8:23 to play and the lead was 22-3.
Fairfield Union had 17 first downs, lost 2 of 3 fumbles and were penalized 3 times for 40 yards. Boston McKoyes had one punt for 30 yards.
The Falcons will move on to the regional quarterfinals where they will face top-seed New Lexington.
