Big 1st inning leads to Vikings rout of Titans

PORTSMOUTH — A solid pitching performance and a 9-run first inning set the tone for Symmes Valley and the Vikings cruised to a 12-0 shutout win over the Notre Dame Titans on Thursday evening in a non-league game.

The Vikings got a solid outing from Tanner Corn, as he gave up just one hit, walked one and fanned 11 batters to earn the win. Corn struck out 5 of his first 7 batters he faced to set the tone on the defensive side.

The only hit the Titans manufactured came in the second when Ethan Kingery led off with a double. But Corn sat down the next three batters with strikeouts to end the inning.

The offense did its part as well, getting a 9-run first inning rally to break the backs of the Titans.

The scoring spree was highlighted by Tanner Thompson getting the Vikings on the board first with a single to score a run. Then Andy Strow doubled to score another and later scored on his own on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Later in the inning, Bronx Carpenter doubled into left with the bases loaded and cleared the bases to make it 8-0 with one out.

The Vikings added 2 more runs in the third when Braden Hankins drove in 2 of his 3 RBI's on a base hit into center field.

The final run came in the fourth, as Will Jones drove in Carpenter on a single into right-center to round out the final score.

The Vikings will now travel to Racine on Saturday to face Southern in a doubleheader.
