IRONTON — “Texas” Jack Vermillion was part of Wyatt Earp’s vendetta ride and helped Virgil Earp stop looting during a Tombstone city fire.

“Texas” Jack Whaley had a “haul” on his ride Monday and helped put out most of the scoring fires Chesapeake tried to start as the St. Joseph Flyers toppled the Panthers 6-2 in a non-league soccer game.

“The first game (against Chesapeake) I got hurt pretty early, so I was kind of playing on one leg. But I felt pretty comfortable today,” said Whaley.

Whaley scored 4 goals — known as a haul — and got plenty of help from his teammates as the Flyers improved to 4-2.

Barrett Waginger had a goal and an assist, Kolton Guston had a goal, and Eli Whaley and Beckham Waginger each had an assist while the Flyers turned in a strong defensive effort.

“Our midfield played pretty good in the second half. Our communication was a lot better and, obviously, Jack’s goals were the difference for us,” said Eli Whaley.

Aden Parrott scored on a penalty kick just 4 minutes into the game to give Chesapeake a 1-0 win.

Jack Whaley scored with an assist from Beckham Waginger to tie the game just 5 minutes later.

Parrott scored on another penalty kick at the 27-minute mark and the Panthers were up 2-1.

But Whaley scored with an assist from Eli Whaley with 26 minutes left in the half and then Whaley scored on a penalty kick a minute later as the Flyers took the lead for good at 3-2.

The Panthers just missed an open goal at the 20-minute mark when the ball sliced to the right of the net.

Whaley completed his haul with an unassisted goal with 10 minutes on the clock and it was 4-2.

The Panthers (2-3) got a red card a minute later and they were forced to finish the game with 10 players due to the ejection.

Barrett Waginger scored on a penalty kick with no time on the clock and the Flyers were up 5-2 at the break.

The final goal came at the 19-minute mark when Kolton Guston scored with an assist from Barrett Waginger.

Flyers’ goalkeeper Peyton Ford had 5 saves while Panthers’ goalkeeper Jacob Bentley had 7 saves.
