Pointers offensive firepower too much for Rockets

WELLSTON — The scoring came fast and never seemed to let up as the South Point Pointers piled up the offense and routed the Wellston Rockets 49-6 on Friday night at C.H. Jones Field.

For the Pointers, their offense dominated the offensive stat sheet, as they out-gained the Rockets 498 to 91 in total yards and doubled Wellston in first downs at 16 to 8.

Landon Vance finished the night with 174 yards on 18 carries and scored 4 rushing touchdowns in the win. The senior back also showcased his speed each time he got to the outside with long touchdown runs of 65 and 74 yards.

Ethan Hunt provided an efficient game at quarterback, completing 20-of-22 passes for 248 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses. Hunt's top target of the night was Davon Lewis who caught 5 passes for 141 yards and was a recipient of a TD toss from Hunt. Robert Napier had the other touchdown catch along with 30 yards receiving on 3 receptions.

Trailing after Vance's first touchdown run, Wellston (1-2) momentarily made things interesting when Carmine Crabtree took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to the house to make the score 7-6 with 9:04 remaining in the first quarter.

But that would be as close as the Rockets would make it, as the Pointers drove right back down the field before settling for a 21-yard field goal from Ezra Young to make it 10-6.

After forcing a three-and-out, Hunt made an option pitch on the first play from scrimmage to Vance and the Pointer tailback lit the fuse and blasted his way past the Rocket defense down the far sideline for 65 yards to make it 17-6.

Vance later added two more rushing scores in the second quarter

Hunt tossed his first TD pass early in the third, when he threw into the flats to Lewis who turned up the sideline and out ran everyone for a 54-yard pitch-and-catch.

The second scoring toss came with 36 seconds remaining before halftime when Hunt found Napier alone in the end zone for a 14-yard scoring play to make it 43-6.

South Point's final score would come from the defense and delivered the exclamation point on the scoring for the game.

A kickoff return by Aidan Arthur set the Rockets up the South Point 30 and a pass interference call pushed them down to the 15 with just18 seconds remaining.

On what would be the final play of the half, Rocket quarterback Djay Hudson let a pass fly into the end zone where Dom Pegram picked the ball off at the goal line and navigated his way back the length of the field for a 100-yard return.

South Point (3-0) returns home on Friday to face the Symmes Valley Vikings in a battle of unbeatens.
