3 local boys teams place in top 5 in sectional golf tournament, advance to district

PORTSMOUTH — Not a bad year for golf in Lawrence County.


Three local teams placed among the top 5 in the Division 2 sectional golf tournament Friday at the Elks Country Club.


The Ironton Fighting Tigers were runners-up with a 334 team score, the Fairland Dragons were fourth at 342 and the Coal Grove Hornets were fifth with a 348 total.


Gallia Academy won the tournament with a 309 score and West Union was third at 341.


The top five teams and individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district Wednesday at Crown Hill Golf Course in Circleville.


Carson Blankenship had rounds of 39 and 38 for a 77 total to pace Ironton.


Asher Keyes shot an 80 with rounds of 37 and 43, Silas Keyes went 45-41 for an 86, Graham Walters and Beckett Heighton each shot a 91. Walters had rounds 43-48 and Heighton 49-42.


E.B. Hall and Kiyan Page led Fairland with identical 84 scores. Hall shot 41-43 and Page 42-42.


Kyle Salyer and Hunter Leep each shot an 87. Salyer was 42-45 and Leep just the opposite at 45-42. Will Southard shot 48-43 for a 91.


Joel Beals led the Hornets with an 80 as he shot 41-39. Carson Hicks was next at 87 with 42-45 rounds and Jayden Webb went 45-44 for an 89.


Colin Harmon was 47-45 for a 92 and Matthew Aldridge 44-51 for a 95 to round out Coal Grove’s scoring.


Piketon was sixth at 352 followed by Northwest at 373, Waverly 375, Wheelersburg 378, Oak Hill 389, Minford 391, Wellston 420 and South Point 454.


Hunter Blake had an 89 as he shot 43-46 to pace the Pointers.


Holden Walker was 60-56 for 116, Landon Short 63-60 for 123 and Jackson Higgins 62-64 for 126.


The Chesapeake Panthers did not have a full team and had no team score.


Greyson Diamond led the Panthers with a 101 on rounds of 46-55 while Easton Collier went 51-60 for 111 and Easton Combs 73-74 for a 147.
