Pointers rushing duo gives Pointers leg up in OVC race

PROCTORVILLE — This time Batman got help from Robin.

The running duo of Landon Vance and Robert Napier combined for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the South Point Pointers held off the Fairland Dragons 30-24 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.

South Point (5-1, 2-0) had 218 net yards rushing as Vance — the team's leading rusher — carried 25 times for 121 yards and two scores while Napier had 11 attempts for a career-high 106 yards.

Quarterback Ethan Hunt was 7 of 14 passing for 77 yards and two TDs. Marcus Hanshaw threw one pass for 44 yards as the Pointers racked up 339 total yards. Davon Lewis caught the pass from Hanshaw as he had a pair of receptions for 84 yards and a score.

Fairland (4-2, 2-1) finished with 271 total yards with 124 rushing and 147 passing as Kinyon Smith was 11 of 18 with three TDs and an interception. Christian Bompus led the ground game with 66 yards on five rushes and a touchdown.

South Point took the opening kickoff and drove right down the field 77 yards in 10 plays with Vance bolting the final18 yards for the score and a 6-0 lead at the 5:42 mark.

Fairland got to the Pointers’ 35 only to be held on downs and the Pointers began another drive that spilled over into the second quarter. On the 12th play of the drive, Hunt hit Vance with a swing pass and he ran 9 yards for the score.

Ezra Young’s conversion kick made it 13-0 with 11:09 on the clock.

Fairland fumbled the ball away but the Dragons Orion Tolbert picked off a pass and returned it 28 yards to the Pointers’ 13-yard line only to have the Pointers’ defense hold again.

After a South Point punt, the Dragons had the ball at Pointers’ 43 and Smith hit Ford Rickard on first down for a touchdown pass and it was 13-6 with 6:28 on the clock.

The Pointers marched to the Fairland 34 only to be held on downs and the Dragons struck again on the ensuing play as Smith and Rylan Blake teamed up a 66-yard catch-and-run play to make it 13-12 with 1:19 left in the half.

Hanshaw’s 44-yard pass to Lewis got the ball to the Fairland 3-yard line with only seconds remaining to set up a 20-yard field goal by Ezra Young with just two seconds to play in the half and it was 16-12.

Fairland turned the ball over on downs at South Point 49 to start the second half and the Pointers used the field position to score again.

A 41-yard run by Napier got the ball to the 5-yard line, but it took the Pointers four plays to score with Vance going the final yard and it was 23-12 with 6:44 on the third quarter clock.

Late in the quarter, Hunt found Lewis wide open and they clicked on a 44-yard pass play to score with 11:50 left in the game. Young added the conversion for a 30-12 lead.

Fairland drove to the 10-yard line only to come up empty again. South Point got to the 46 only to lose the ball on a fumble as Collins recovered at the 46.

Collins had a 28-yard run that got the Dragons to the Pointers’ 13-yard line and Bompus scored on a 9-yard run with 3:58 left and it was 30-18.

The Dragons recovered the onside kick-off at the Pointers’ 47. Five plays later, Smith hit Blake with a 25-yard touchdown pass in the end zone on fourth down and it was 30-24 with 2:41 left.

Fairland tried another onside kick-off but the Pointers recovered and were able to run out the clock.

This Friday, South Point will host Chesapeake and Fairland visits Portsmouth in league games.
