Flyer Soccer Roundup: Waginger's key win over Clay; Whaley nets 4 in rout of Western

The St. Joseph Flyers have had a busy schedule filled with Southern Ohio Conference 1 opponents.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Flyers had a battle for first place with Lucasville Valley Indians and lost 4-1.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Barrett Waginger at the 32-minute mark.

But 3 minutes later, Valley tied the game on an unassisted goal by Caysen Zieber.

The Indians took the lead for good when Elijah Keller made a crossover pass to Aiden Burchett who scored at the 14-minute mark and it was 2-1.

Valley scored 2 more goals in the second half as Rydan Romanello scored on an unassisted goal at the 16-minute mark, while Elijah Keller had an unassisted goal with just 3-minutes to play.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, the Flyers bounced back with a 5-1 win over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.

"In the second half, we put it together and kept possession," said Flyers coach Mike Balestra. "But overall, the defense was outstanding. (Clay) had a tight group of kids up front. They're really good athletes and we did a great job of keeping them scoreless for so long.

St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead when Beckham Waginger scored off a corner kick from Jack Whaley at the 21-minute mark.

But Clay tied the game at the 7-minute mark of the first half on an unassisted goal by London Sinclair.

The Flyers then took the lead for good a minute later as Beckham Waginger scored off a free kick from Mason Weber and it was 2-1.

St. Joseph scored 3 goals in the second half to take the easy win.

Barrett Waginger scored off an assist from Jack Whaley just 3 minutes into the second half and it was 3-1.

Barrett Waginger padded the lead as he scored with 13 minutes on the clock by drilling a penalty kick into the back of the net.

Jack Whaley’s unassisted goal with 2 minutes left set the final score.

On Friday, Sept. 18, the Flyers cruised past the Western Indians 8-1 as Jack Whaley recorded a haul with all 4 goals coming in the first half and 4 different players scoring for St. Joseph.

Barrett Waginger got the Flyers scoring underway with a goal just 2 minutes into the game thanks to an assist from Mitchell “All-SOC Golf” Heighton.

Whaley took over with 2 goals only a minute apart with assists from Barrett Waginger and Mason Weber

Another minute later, Weber went from assist to scoring as he got a goal with an assist from Eli Whaley.

It was Ladies Day as well when Sophia Rowe drilled a goal with an assist from Jack Whaley at the 22-minute mark.

Jack Whaley then scored the final 2 goals of the half with an assist from Trey Erlenwein and then an unassisted goal.

Western got on the scoreboard at the 24-minute mark of the second half as Wyatt McClay scored an unassisted goal.

But the Flyers got the goal back as Weber scored an unassisted goal with 10 minutes to play.

St. Joseph (6-3, 3-1) will host New Boston on Wednesday in an SOC game.
