Lady Tigers make clean sweep of girls OVC golf tournament

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — When you have 4 of the top 13 golfers in the tournament including the best player, your chances of winning should be pretty good.

For the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers, they weren’t just good. They were the best.

Led by the Player of the Year Mairin Walters, Ironton won the Ohio Valley Conference Golf Tournament Friday at Esquire Golf Course.

Walters shot an 81 to take medalist honors while Samiya Blackburn of Chesapeake was two shots back.

Ironton had a 387 team score with the Chesapeake Lady Panthers runners-up at 397.

The Gallia Academy Blue Angels were third at 434, the Rock Hill Redwomen 454, the Fairland Lady Dragons 463 and the South Point Lady Pointers 487.

Joining Walters on the first team were teammates Layla Townsend and Kaylee Bridges with Bella Adams named honorable mention.

Ironton’s Nathan Kerns was named the Coach of the Year.

Also on the first team were Blackburn, Emma White and Siena Bozick of Chesapeake, Laelle Gilmore of Rock Hill, Kaylee Stidham of South Point, and Ellie Kingery of Gallia Academy.

Cadence Soper of Chesapeake, Madeline Schneider for Fairland, and Ella Francis of Gallia Academy were honorable mention.
