Red Devils fall to Tigers in defensive battle

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — It was one of those games when you just grit your teeth. The defenses were going to dominate.

And the defense did just that in this battle of unbeatens as the Paintsville Tigers edged the Russell Red Devils 13-7 on Friday.

Paintsville (4-0) held Russell to 198 total yards while the Red Devils limited the Tigers to 218 yards.

Paintsville quarterback Parker Helton was 12 of 22 for 127 yards and a touchdown. Logan Carpenter ran 7 times for 42 yards and a score while Anderson Lauffer had 5 receptions for 79 yards and a TD.

Russell did most of its damage on the ground with 135 yards, led by Kaiden Benge with 81 yards on 16 attempts.

Quarterback Hunter Williams was 8 of 13 for 63 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Wide receiver Griffin Fisher caught 4 passes for 50 yards and a score.

The Tigers got inside the Russell 10-yard line at the 7 but ended up facing a fourth and goal from the one. Helton rolled right and his Lauffer for a 1-yard scoring pass and a 6-0 lead.

During the drive, the Tigers converted three 4th downs en route to the score.

Russell (3-1) came back to take the lead on a 40-yard pass from Williams to Fisher. Sam Totten kicked that conversion and the Red Devils led 7-6.

But Paintsville answered with a scoring drive that ended on a 32-yard run by Carpenter. Carson Montgomery kicked the extra point and it was 13-7.

Lauffer made two huge back-to-back plays on the drive.

First, converting a fake punt deep in their own territory. Then later Lauffer caught a pass from Helton for a 38-yard gain into Russell territory.

The Devils took their opening drive of the second half and went the length of the field, only to come up shy on a fourth down run at the Paintsville 3 with 4:50 to go in the quarter.

A controversial moment happened on the ensuing play when Logan Carpenter took a handoff on an outside run play looking to bounce to the outside by bending back into his own end zone. However, Caden Hampton and Lane Osborne combined to bring Carpenter down in the end zone for what appeared to be a safety.

However, the runner was awarded forward progress at the one and allowing the Tigers to maintain possession.

In the fourth, Paintsville lined up for a 38 yard field goal and a chance to put the game away, but Jordan Rowe came from the edge and was able to deflect the ball and allow Fisher to field the ball from his own 2 and return it back out to the 26 with 4:30 to play.

Russell was at its own 26 when Williams tried to hit Fisher who was streaking down the sideline only to be intercepted by Lauffer with 4:37 to play.

The Tigers were able to run out the clock and preserve the win.

Russell plays at rival Ashland this Friday.
