The St. Joseph Flyers opened the season with a 13-0 shutout over the Rock Hill Redmen as Barrett Waginger had a hat trick while “Texas” Jack Whaley scored twice and had 3 assists.

Eli Whaley had 2 goals while Sophia Rowe and Pierson Guston both had a pair assists.

GAME 2: SAINT JOSEPH 2, CHESAPEAKE 0

CHESAPEAKE — Facing one of the favorites to win the Ohio Valley Conference, the St. Joseph Flyers picked up a tough 2-0 road win over the Chesapeake Panthers.

The game was scoreless until the second half when Mason Weber scored an unassisted goal at the 15-minute mark.

The Flyers added an insurance goal with 9 minutes to play when Barrett Waginger scored off a pass from Weber.

Goalkeeper Peyton Ford had 3 saves and the Flyers limited Chesapeake to only 4 total shots with 3 on goal.

GAME: 3 LYNCHBURG-CLAY 4, SAINT JOSEPH 2

IRONTON — In a battle with a strong division 5 program, the St. Joseph Flyers battled only to lose to the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs 4-2.

The Flyers held a 2-1 halftime lead only to see the Mustangs rally in the second half and outscore the Flyers 3-0.

Barrett Waginger put the Flyers up 1-0 when he scored an unassisted goal off a deflected shot by Mason Weber at the 32-minute mark of the first half.

The Mustangs tied the game on a corner kick by Owen Faust with 18 minutes on the clock.

St. Joseph (2-1) took its final lead when “Texas” Jack Whaley scored with an assist from Waginger.

The Mustangs (3-2) took control in the second half as Colton Short got an unassisted goal 4 minutes into the half and then scored at the 20-minute mark with an assist from Aric Slack.

The Mustangs added a goal on Slack’s second assist as Darryn Odum scored with 8 minutes left.

Lynchburg-Clay were efficient offensively by taking only 11 shots with 5 on goal.

GAME 4: SAINT JOSEPH 5, PORTSMOUTH CLAY 1

PORTSMOUTH — When you consider the game is soccer, it’s always good to get off on the right foot, or feet in this case.

The St. Joseph Flyers opened Southern Ohio Conference play with a 5-1win over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.

The Flyers started sluggish as they led just 1-0 at the half before getting in gear and rolling past the Panthers in the second half.

St. Joseph (3-1, 1-0) went ahead 1-0 at the 24-minute mark of the first half on a goal by Barrett Waginger with an assist from “Texas” Jack Whaley.

The assist was just the beginning for Whaley who came out the second half and scored 3 straight goals for a hat trick.

Whaley scored at the 34-minute mark with an assist from Mason Weber. Whaley’s next 2 goals came in rapid fire as he scored with 25 minutes on the clock and then got a goal only a minute later. Waginger got the assist on both goals.

Clay finally got a goal when Colton Fannin scored off a deflection by a Flyers’ player at the 7-minute mark.

The Flyers got the goal back just a minute later when Kolton Guston scored off an assist by Whaley.

Goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had 4 saves.

St. Joseph had 23 shots with 14 on goal and Clay had just 8 shots with 5 on goal.

GAME 5: SOUTH WEBSTER 4, SAINT JOSEPH 3

SOUTH WEBSTER — The St. Joseph Flyers were up against one of the best teams and they refused to blink.

The Flyers faced the South Webster Jeeps on Saturday and were tied until six minutes to play in a 4-3 loss.

One of the area’s top soccer teams, the Jeeps reached the regional semifinals in 2023 and were in the district finals last season.

South Webster (3-1) is ranked No. 74 among all teams in Ohio and their only loss was 1-0 to Minford which is rated the No. 14 team in the state.

St. Joseph (3-2) took a 1-0 lead when “Texas” Jack Whaley scored an unassisted goal at the 23-minute mark of the first half.

But the Jeeps came back to take a 2-1 lead as Kelvyn Purcell scored off a throw from Kaden Perkins at the 18-minute mark and then he scored again with just one minute on the clock with an assist from Caden Johnson.

The lead went to 3-1 with 35 minutes on the second half clock as Purcell got a hat trick with an unassisted goal.

St. Joseph answered as Barrett Waginger got goals at the 18-minute mark and the 9-minute mark — both with assists from Whaley.

But Wesley Bobst got an assist from Purcell to score with 6 minutes to play and provide the margin of victory.

The Flyers took 11 shots with 4 on goal. The Jeeps had 13 shots with 11 on goal.

St. Joseph goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had 7 saves.
