WHEELERSBURG — The Portsmouth Trojans found the Wheelersburg Pirates to be very offensive.
VERY offensive.
The Pirates scored on every possession and rolled up 473 total yards as they cruised to a 63-0 season opening win over the Trojans on Friday night.
Wheelersburg had 10 different ball carriers and eight different receivers as Coach Rob Woodward emptied his bench.
Quarterback Jack Doerr was nearly perfect as he hit 10 of 11 attempts for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns. Backup Graer Woodward was 2 of 2 for 36 yards and a score as the Pirates got 247 total passing yards.
Xavier Miller caught 4 passes for 84 yards and a TD while Lane Williams had 2 receptions for 36 yards and a score.
Brady Music led a balanced running game with 41 yards on 3 carries with Colton Jennings coming off the bench to get 45 yards on one attempt.
While the offense was clicking, the defense was suffocating. The Pirates held the Trojans to just 2 net yards rushing, 139 yards passing and only 5 first downs.
Portsmouth began the game with a long pass from Camron Williams to J.J. Henderson who caught the ball and ran deep into Wheelersburg territory only to fumble when he was grabbed from behind and the Pirates recovered at the 11-yard line.
The Pirates then went the distance in five players with Stephen Hall scoring on a 1-yard run. Cameron Conn’s conversion made it 7-0 at the 855 mark.
The Trojans were forced to punt and Xavier Miller returned the kick 46 yards for a touchdown and the Pirates were up 14-0 with 7:03 on the clock.
Portsmouth punted again and Miller returned the boot for a score only to have the ball called back to the 41-yard line due to a penalty.
But it only took the Pirates three plays to score as Doerr hit Jonah Collier with a 21-yard scoring strike and it was 21-0 with 3:40 left in the quarter.
Wheelersburg got the ball back at its own 15-yard line and went on an 85-yard scoring drive in just five plays capped by a 44-yard catch and run by Miller from Doerr and it was 28-0 with just 9 seconds off the second quarter clock.
The Trojans elected to gamble on fourth down and were stopped with a 6-yard loss at their own 22.
Three plays later, Hall went 7 yards for the score and a 35-0 lead with 9:26 to play in the half.
A 28-yard run by Canaan Arthur and a 29-yard pass to Gabe Campbell set up a 5-yard run by Logan Whitt and it was 42-0 at the 5:56 mark.
The final touchdown came with just 44 seconds left in the half on a 45-yard pass from Doerr to Graham Hanes to make it 49-0.
Quarterback Graer Woodward got his first varsity touchdown pass with a 21-yard strike to Lane Williams in the third quarter at the 5:46 mark.
The final score was a 20-yard run by Whitt with 4:44 to play.
