5th inning rally sparks Tigers past Redmen

PEDRO — Sometimes the Ironton Fighting Tigers just don’t get in a hurry.

The Fighting Tigers fell behind in the first inning and trailed until the fifth inning before they came to life and rolled to a 10-2 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redmen on Monday.

Rock Hill (2-6, 2-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and kept it until Ironton got 4 runs in the fifth inning.

With one out, Carson Doolin and Braylon McClellan got base hits and moved up on a wild pitch.

A throwing error on the play allowed both runners to score.

Rock Hill starter Dawson Lewis was pitching a shutout until Ironton’s bats came to life.

In the fifth, Bryson Kerns walked, Tyler Roach singled and Braydon Baker tripled them home.

Ian Ginger followed with an RBI single, Jacob Hughes singled and Ginger scored on Carson Freeman’s ground out.

The Fighting Tigers tacked on 6 runs in the sixth inning to build the 10-2 lead.

With one out, Kerns singled and scored on Roach’s double. Ginger had an RBI single, stole second and third and scored on a double by Hughes.

Tanner Kleinman was hit by a pitch and Freeman belted a 2-run double. Ethan Sutton capped the rally with an RBI double.

Freeman came on in relief of Baker who started on the mound for Ironton. Freeman pitched 5 hitless innings as he struck out 5 and walked just one to get the win.

Ironton finished with 15 hits as Roach went 3-5 with a double and an RBI, Baker 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI, Ginger 2-5 with 2 RBI, Hughes 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Kleinman 2-3 with a double, Freeman 1-3 with a double and 3 RBI, Kerns 2-4 and Sutton 1-2 with a double and RBI.
