Just when it appeared Russell Red Devils’ twin brothers were headed in opposite directions for the first time in their lives, an offer came that they couldn’t refuse.
Wide receivers Jayden Pennington and Cayden Pennington were going through the recruiting process and were looking at the possibility that the scholarship money available might send then to different schools.
And then Union Commonwealth University showed up.
“We both agreed that if it happened, we’d both go separate ways and each make our own path. But it’s really exciting to be able to play together,” said Jayden.
Despite being late to the party, Union came in with the best offer which made the decision easy.
“No, Union actually kind of showed up late. We were really focused on Muskingum and Thomas Moore for the most part,” said Jayden.
“But when the money is not there, what are you supposed to do. So, Union just ended up being the best choice for both of us.”
The brothers not only played wide receiver but defensive back as well. Cayden said Union offered a chance to choose their position.
“They kind of gave us the option on which side of the ball to play. We both always preferred to play offense and wide receiver,” said Cayden.
“But they just expect us to come in and get to work and earn playing time.”
Both Pennington brothers stand 5-foot-10, 155 pounds and have excellent speed. Besides football, the duo also run track and have the option to participate in that sport as well.
“I’m probably going to stay single sport and focus on my academics more,” said Cayden who plans to major in biology and go to medical school.
“So, them having a top-notch science center only boosted my decision to go there.”
Like his brother, Jayden plans to join his brother in their college studies.
“They have a brand new Science Center and I’m wanting to go into biology and pre-med, so it’s right in line with my goals,” said Jayden.
Keeping in step with their similar futures, the brothers share the same best highlight moment of their prep careers.
“The highlight I remember the most was from the district championship game against East Carter to put us 20-0,” said Jayden.
“But really, the grand scheme of things, the best thing I’ll remember is our group of seniors brought this program back up and win back-to-back 10-win seasons.”
Cayden echoed his brother’s highlight choice.
“I’d say my favorite moment was winning the district championship this past year. We weren’t really expected to win by much but we played a great game that night and it was fun with all my senior buddies to do that together,” said Cayden.
Unfortunately at the moment, the brothers also share the game of golf in their spare time.
“Still terrible. Still terrible,” said Cayden.
But Jayden offered a glimmer of hope in non-football passion.
“I haven’t played since football season started. Maybe we’ll have time there,” said Jayden.
Fortunately for Jayden and Cayden Pennington, their money is on football.
