Bobcats overcome walks, errors to take down Trojans

PORTSMOUTH — If you have 6 walks and 6 errors, you’re probably looking at a loss.

Well, if you’re the Green Bobcats, you’re looking pretty good.

Green used the 3-hit pitching of Jon Knapp to overcome 6 walks and 6 errors to beat the Portsmouth Trojans 12-4 on Wednesday.

“It was ugly, but it was a win,” said Green coach Dave Shoupe. “Usually, when you have a game like this it ends up badly for you. But we hit the ball and Jon pitched really well except for the walks.”

Knapp struck out 9 and only 3 of the runs were earned as he pitched a complete game.

Portsmouth (18-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Logan Adkins reached on a two-base error, stole third and scored on an error.

The lead didn’t last long as Green erupted for 7 runs in the top of the third.

Kase McIntyre was hit by a pitch leading off, Brennan Renison walked and Conner Blanton singled. Riddick Jenkins and Mason Neal walked to force in a run, Gabe Blevins hit a sacrifice fly, Knapp was hit by a pitch, and Uriah Satterfield doubled home the final 2 runs.

Green (20-4) added 2 more runs in the top of the fifth.

Neal and Blevins singled and Knapp got a hit and an error on the play scored the runners.

The Trojans answered with 3 runs in the bottom half of the fifth to trail 9-4.

Caine Boggs and Jacob Roth started the inning with walks and and out later Cam Williams walked to load the bases.

Trevin Brooks singled for two runs and Eli Roth singled home the third run.

But the Bobcats came right back and got 3 runs of their own in the sixth.

Blevins was 2-3 with 2 RBI, and Knapp 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI to pace the Green offense. Neal was 2-3, Satterfield 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI, and Blanton 1-3 for Green.

Brooks was 2-4 with an RBI and Roth 1-3 with 2 RBI for Portsmouth.
