Gillespie, Lapole account for 4 RBIs to key Dragons win over Hornets

PROCTORVILLE —The Fairland Dragons’ bats just kept hitting away and as a result they just kept scoring.

Fairland had 13 hits and scored in four of their six at-bats as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 13-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.

Fairland (7-8, 5-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Tanner Brown walked and Chase Lapole had an RBI triple. Josh Gillespie followed with a double for a run and Nolan Fleming singled in the final run.

Coal Grove (5-9, 2-7) got a run in the fourth inning when Braden Schug singled, moved up on a ground out, took third on an error and stole home to make it 3-1.

Fairland got 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-1.

Jack Chapman doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Lapole. Gillespie and Fleming followed with base hits.

The Dragons opened up a 9-1 lead with 4 runs in the fifth inning.

Titus Martin doubled, Ayden Napier and Cyrus Cummings singled, Chapman was safe on a two-base error, and Gillespie got a hit and an outfield error scored the final run.

The Hornets got a run in the top of the sixth as Schug singled and scored when Caden Turner reached on a two-base error.

Fairland got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Martin and a double by Cummings.

Fleming worked the first 6 innings for the win as he gave up 4 hits, 2 unearned runs with 6 strikeouts and one walk. Tanner Brown finished and gave up a hit while striking out 3 and walking one.

Fairland had 13 hits with Gillespie going 3-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Lapole 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI, Fleming 2-4 with an RBI, Cummings 2-3 with a double and RBI, Chapman 1-2 with a double, Martin 1-3 with a double, and both Brown and Napier 1-4.

Schug was 3-3 and Keaton and McKnight both 1-3 for the Hornets.
