Postgame interview with Saint Joseph's Blake Medinger, Carson Willis and Evan Aldridge. The three talk about the team rebounding from a tough loss to Green on Friday, the offense dominating all afternoon and looking ahead to tournament play.

AID — A huge 5-run outburst in the first inning helped the Saint Joseph Flyers ride the wave of momentum and beat the Symmes Valley Vikings 9-6 on Saturday.

“Barrett did a phenomenal job throwing strikes and his defense backed him up,” said Flyers coach Nick Medinger.

“It also doesn't hurt to take the mound with a 5-run lead, so give credit to the kids for swinging the bat and making things happen.”

The Flyers got their offense clicking from the beginning as RBI singles from both Beckham Waginger and Carson Willis scored a run each.

Carson Lyons then singled into right field to score a pair. With two outs, Braden Neal doubled into right to score a run and make it 5-0.

Symmes Valley would answer in the second and cut the Flyers lead down to two.

A first-pitch hit from Ben Hutchison fell into left and scored a run. Gradee Holland followed up on the very next pitch and drove in two more runs.

Evan Aldridge would get one of those runs back for Saint Joseph to lead off the third, as the senior catcher drove a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall to make the score 6-3.

The Flyers later extended their lead to 9-3 with two more runs scored off of base hits from Barrett and Beckham Waginger in the fifth. The other run came in the sixth when Lyons singled in a run with two outs.

The Vikings rallied one more time in the bottom of the sixth and scored 3 runs to cut the deficit to 9-6. However, Barrett Waginger got three straight outs to close out the inning and preserve the lead.

Waginger would go on to retire three of the final four batters he faced in the seventh, striking out the last two to end the game.

AID — The offense continued to stay hot in the second game as the Saint Joseph Flyers banged out 13 hits and beat the Southern Tornadoes 11-1 for a run-rule win on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers hitting output was led by senior Blake Medinger going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in 3 runs.

Barrett Waginger went 2-2, Beckham Waginger 1-3 with an RBI, Mason Weber 2-3 with an RBI, Evan Aldridge 1-2 with two RBI, Carson Willis 2-2 with an RBI, Carson Lyons 1-3 with two RBI, and Ian Whaley went 1-3.

The Flyers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with a 7-run rally to blow the game wide open.

Medinger scored on a wild pitch to kick off the scoring and then consecutive base hits from Beckham Waginger, Weber, Aldridge and Willis scored a run each time to widen the lead out to 5-0.

With two on with two outs, Medinger singled back up the middle to clear the bases and make it 7-0.

The Flyers added four more runs in the fourth to make it 11-0.

Southern scored a run in the top of the fifth on a base hit into left field by Will Smith, but that wouldn’t be enough as the Flyers got two more outs to get the run rule win.

Beckham Waginger picked up the win for the Flyers, giving up just two hits, five walks and striking out 3 hitters in four innings of work. Weber came on in the fifth in relief to close out the game.

Jeremy Harmon took the loss for the Tornadoes.

Offensively, Southern was led by Smith who drove in their only run in the fifth with an RBI single into center. Hunter Jarrell and Kase Nelson had the Tornadoes other hits.
