IRONTON — Evidently “zero” is Dawson Philyaw’s favorite number.
Philyaw kept putting zero on the scoreboard in each inning as the Ironton Fighting Tigers blanked the Rock Hill Redmen 10-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Philyaw allowed just five hits for the complete game win as he struck out 10 and did not issue a walk. Philyaw threw just 75 pitches with 57 strikes.
“Dawson Philyaw pitched a great game,” said Ironton coach John Hunt. “Bryson Kerns hit the ball well. Actually, the top of our order hit the ball well.”
Ironton (7-2, 6-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Bryson Kerns led off with a double, Braydon Baker had an RBI single and stole second, and Ethan Sutton got a one-out RBI single.
The lead went to 4-0 in the third inning.
Kerns tripled and scored on wild pitch for the first run. Baker reached on an error, Jacob Hughes walked, Sutton was hit by a pitch and Philyaw walked to force home a run.
Ironton got three runs in the fourth inning to go up 7-0 when Silas Ginger was safe on an error, Kerns and Baker walked and Hughes tripled to clear the bases.
The final three runs scored in the sixth to end the game due to the run rule.
Kerns was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a hit by Baker who also stole second and scored when Sutton reached on an error.
Sutton stole second and scored on a hit by Tanner Kleinman.
Kerns was 2-2 with a double and a triple to pace Ironton. Baker was 2-3 with an RBI, Hughes 1-3 with a triple and 3 RBI, Sutton 1-3 with 2 RBI and Kleinman 1-4 with 2 RBI.
Austin Simpson was 2-2, Braylin McClellan 2-3 with two doubles, and Yaden Bailey 1-3 for Rock Hill (3-7, 2-5).
