Dragons capitalize on extra base runners to down Pointers

PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland Dragons took advantage of everything they were given to work with on offense.

The Dragons had just 7 hits but combined them with 15 walks as they routed the South Point Pointers 13-5 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.

Fairland (4-6, 2-2) was led by Josh Gillespie who was 2-4 with a run batted in, Cyrus Cummings who was 1-3 with a double and 3 RBI, Tanner Brown was 2-3.

Chase Lapole and Titus Martin were each 1-3 with an RBI.

Gillespie got the win as he teamed with Nolan Fleming and Cummings to give up 5 earned runs, 8 strikeouts and no walks.

South Point (1-7, 1-3) outhit the Dragons 12-7 led by Elye Patterson who was 3-3 and Marcus Handshaw who went 2-4 with an RBI.

Caesyn Pope also went 2-4, Owen Tabor 1-3 with an RBI, Kevin Murphy and Robert Napier each 1-3, and Ryder Pratt was 2-3.

South Point got a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Tabor, but the Dragons took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on 7 walks and a hit batsman.

Pratt and Patterson singled and Rylan McKenzie grounded out as the Pointers got a run in the second.

The Dragons went up 7-2 in the third inning on a 2-run double by Cummings and Gillespie’s RBI single.

Fairland made it 9-2 in the fifth on 2 walks, a hit batsman and a hit by Brown.

The Pointers scored 3 runs in the sixth on hits by Handshaw, Napier and Pratt and a hit batsman.

Fairland answered with 4 runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.

Gillespie and Lapole singled and Gillespie scored on an error. Brown, Fleming and Jack Chapman and Ayden Napier all walked.
