Sixth Inning rally lifts Dragons over Hornets

COAL GROVE — Better late than never.
The Fairland Dragons rallied in the sixth inning and edged the Coal Grove Hornets 5-4 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Fairland (3-5, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead to start the game but Coal Grove tied the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Coal Grove (2-5, 0-3) took a 2-1 lead in the third and then went up 4-1 in the fourth inning.
But Fairland put together a four-run rally in the sixth and then held on to win.
Nolan Fleming got the win in relief of starter Josh Gillespie with Tanner Brown working the final two innings for the same.
Gillespie went four innings allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned run, with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. Fleming went one inning with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks while Brown gave up no hits and struck out 4 with no walks.
Fleming was 1-3 with a run batted in, Chase Lapole 1-4 with an RBI, Landon Evans and Brown both 1-2, Eli Pine and Mac Clark each 1-3, and Cyrus Cummings had an RBI.
Coal Grove starter Truitt Fields worked six innings and gave up 5 hits, 5 runs of which only 3 were earned, and 4 walks. Leland McKnight finished up and didn’t allow a run and just one hit and one strikeout.
The Hornets had 7 hits as Derek Bloomfield went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Caden Turner 2-4 with a double, McKnight 1-2, Karden Keaton 1-3 and Braden Schug 1-4.
