Lady Highlanders pull away in 5th inning to down Lady Dragons

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The game was going back and forth until it didn’t come back for the Fairland Lady Dragons.

In a game that saw the lead change hands four times, the Lady Dragons lost 14-6 to the Huntington Lady Highlanders on Monday.

Huntington (2-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Fairland went ahead 3-2 lead in the top of the third when Taegan Leep slugged a home run after Maddie Cornwell singled and Aubree Cyrus walked.

Huntington rallied in the bottom of the inning with three runs and took a 5-3 lead. Addison Stubblefield had a two-run homer to highlight the rally.

The lead changed hands twice in the fourth inning as well.

Maddie Schneider was hit by a pitch and Emmy Brown walked to start the fourth for Fairland (1-3). Maddie Cornwell singled, Hayes reached on a fielder’s choice and Cyrus drilled a two-run triple.

The Lady Highlanders scored four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to end the game.

Fairland had eight hits with Cornwell point 3-3, Leep 1-3 with a home run and three RBI, Schneider 2-2 with a double, Cyrus 1-2 with a triple and two RBI, and Short 1-2.

Huntington had 13 hits led by Ellie Fei who was 4-4 with an RBI,  Alani Sharp was 3-3 with a double and an RBI, Riley Hedrick 3-4 had a double and three RBI, and Stubblefield was 1-4 with a home run and three RBI.
