PEDRO — The Redmen are blue collar.
First-year Rock Hill Redmen head coach David Schug can best describe his team are hard-workers.
“It’s been an honor really. The kids have worked very hard and they’ve been accepting. The culture has been great,” said Schug. “They’ve learned. The locker room has been great. I’m just really excited to see what they can do.”

Heading up the returning players are 6-foot-5 senior center Izaak Cox — the defending Division 3 state long jump champion —plus 5-10 sophomore guard Kelan Davidson and 5-9 sophomore guard Rylan Barker.
“Cox brings a lot to the defensive side and we’re looking for him to score more for use,” said Schug.
“Davidson is a hard-nosed basketball player. He’s a smart kid and works hard for me. Barker has some good wheels. He handles the ball well and hopefully he can lead our team from the point guard position.”
In the rotation will be 6-3 senior Drew Schug, junior guard Mayson Black, and 6-4 freshman Carson Medinger.
“Drew is a blue collar, hard-working kid and a good leader. He does what we ask. Mayson Black is a hard-working kid who has really come along. He’s been with us for the last six months and day after day just putting in a good work ethic,” said coach Schug.
“My team is made up mostly of sophomores right now. We’re kind of young on experience. We have a freshman in Carson Medinger who we’re looking to get some minutes from. He’s about 6-3 or 6-4 and can shoot the ball. He’s just got to get some experience and get more comfortable in the system.”
With a hard-working team, it’s no surprise that he sees the work ethic as the team’s strength.
“Just the effort with which we play with is a strength. We try to win every loose ball. We rebound pretty well as a team and defensively we’ve really been communicating and talking. We’re playing with high energy and effort right now,” said coach Schug.
In the Ohio Valley Conference, coach Schug sees a balanced league and he doesn’t plan to concede anything to anyone.
“I’ll be honest with you. I think the team can compete with anybody if we play hard. Any given night, we can compete. It’s the mindset we want to have around here that we have a chance if we do what we’re supposed to do,” said coach Schug.
“I don’t count us as a loss against anybody going in. We just need to play hard, see what happens and do what we’re supposed to do, take care of business and wait for the outcome.”
