Cold-shooting 2nd quarter dooms Flyers in tourney loss to Whiteoak

MOWERYTOWN — The St. Joseph Flyers went on the road for their tournament game, but they must have forgotten to pack their offense.


Missing leading scorer Barrett Waginger, St. Joseph struggled to score and lost 73-40 to the Whiteoak Wildcats in the division 7 district quarterfinals on Thursday.


Whiteoak took an 18-12 first quarter lead as Christopher Wessner scored 8 points including a pair of 3-pointers.


Zane Dressel hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points, Carson Willis had 4 points and Eli Whaley knocked down a trifecta for the Flyers.


The Wildcats opened up a 37-18 halftime lead as Jason Gaskins scored 7 points and Lucas Pollard hit a trey and scored 5 points.


St. Joseph could only muster 4 points by Carter Johnson and Willis had a basket to account for their offense in the quarter.


The Wildcats erupted for 23 points in the third quarter to open up a 60-32 lead.


Pollard had 6 points while Gaskins and Brady Brandenburg got 4 each.


The Flyers did score 14 points in the third quarter as Willis had 4 points and Andy Listerman hit a trey but the outcome had already been settled.


Willis scored 10 points with Dressel and Whaley netting 8 each to pace the Flyers (9-13).


The Wildcats (10-13) had four players in double figures led by Gaskins with 19 points. Wassner made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points while Pollard and Brandenburg scored 11 each.
