Dominant 2nd quarter keys Redmen win over Flyers

PEDRO — Being second was better than being first for the Rock Hill Redmen.
After leading by one point in the first quarter, the Redmen used a decisive second quarter to trigger a 60-37 win over the St. Joseph Flyers in the season opener for both teams.
Rock Hill took a 15-14 first quarter lead as Yaden Bailey and Rylan Barker scored 5 points each.
Eli Whaley drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points while Zane Dressel added 4 points to keep the Flyers close.
But the Flyers’ offense went stone cold in the second quarter as they managed just 5 points and the Redmen pulled away for a 30-19 halftime cushion. Barker hit a 3-pointer and scored 10 points.
Rock Hill (1-0) continued to pull away in the third quarter by outscoring St. Joseph 18-10 and built a 48-29 lead.
Kelan Davidson had a trey and scored 5 points with Jarrod Bridges and Bailey scoring 4 points.
Dressel knocked down a trey and had 6 of the Flyers’ points.
Each team had 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Barker led all scorers with 22 points. Davidson and Bailey had 11 points each for the Redmen.
Dressel topped the Flyers with 11 points and Whaley finished with 8 points.
Beckham Waginger had 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals to pace the Flyers in each category.
