Three different scorers hit double figures in Lady Hornets win over Lady Vikings

COAL GROVE — The defense was at work early, which stopped anything bad from happening late.

Coal Grove’s defense was able to shut down the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings’ offense in the first half as the Lady Hornets went on to post a 49-36 win on Saturday.

Coal Grove (7-1) built a 15-point halftime lead and played virtually even in the second half to get the win.

“I felt we were able to contain their two scoring guards in the first half by holding them to one two-point field goal,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “Our help defense was very good. They were able to get their offense going in the second half.”

Jenna Anson scored 5 points and Emma Lively hit a 3-pointer as Coal Grove took an 8-2 first quarter lead.

The Lady Hornets extended the lead to 22-7 at the half as Anson scored 6 points and Izzy Kitts nailed a 3-pointer and scored 5 points.

Symmes Valley cut into the lead in the third quarter by getting within 35-22 as Lydia Saunders scored 5 points and Brenna Tibbs also had 5 points including a 3-pointer.

Karli Shore hit a 3-pointer and a free throw while Lively had 4 points for Coal Grove.

Each team scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Lively got 8 points while Kitts scored 6 points including 4 of 6 from the foul line.

Saunders scored 5 more points and Tibbs got 5 as well including another 3-pointer.

Coal Grove was paced by Lively with 15 points with Anson netting 14 and Kitts scoring 13.

The Lady Vikings (1-7) were led by Saunders with 14 points and Tibbs scored 12.
