PEEBLES — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets can go deep.
No, they aren't hitting a lot of home runs. Instead, they have a lot of players on the roster who can help contribute to their basketball success.
That depth was on display Tuesday when the Lady Hornets overcame severe foul trouble to beat the Peebles Lady Indians 57-41.
“We had foul trouble throughout the entire game. One player fouled out and two others ended with four,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller.
“Our bench came in and did a great job of keeping us in the game. Freshmen Palin Hunter, Karli Shore, Rebekah Dome and sophomore Haili McKnight played a lot of minutes. They were big for us.”
Taylor hit a trey and scored 4 of the Lady Hornets’ points in the first quarter as they took a 9-8 lead.
Kendall Myers had all 8 points for Peebles.
Coal Grove extended the lead to 26-23 at the half as 8 different plays scored with Dome getting 5 points and Emma Lively knocking down a 3-pointer.
Myers carried the Lady Indians again with 10 points including 6 of 6 at the foul line.
The Lady Hornets took control in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Indians 22-8 and opened up a 48-31 cushion.
Jenna Anson scored 9 points in the outburst, Lively drained a pair of triples and Hunter had 4 points.
Myers scored 5 points for Peebles.
Izzy Kitts had half of Coal Grove’s 8 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hornets coasted to the win.
Alonso hit a 3-pointer and scored 4 points for Peebles in the final quarter.
“Kendal Taylor played a great defensive game on their good guard. She held her to 3 points for the game,” said Miller.
Coal Grove had balanced scoring led by Anson with 12 points despite being in foul trouble. Lively got 9 points as she went 3 of 3 from behind the arc while Kitts also played with foul trouble but had 9 points. Hunter scored 8 points and Tayor had 7 points and 4 assists.
Myers scored a game-high 26 for Peebles (0-1).
Coal Grove is hosting Ross County Christian Friday night and visits Gallia Academy on Tuesday for an Ohio Valley Conference game.
