SOUTH POINT — The offense did its job, but the defense was on the job.

The South Point Pointers used a strong defensive effort to shut down the Chesapeake offense and beat the Panthers 33-8 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.

The Pointers are now 6-1 overall and lead the OVC at 3-0. Chesapeake falls to 2-5 and 0-3.

South Point’s defense used its pressure defense to stuff the Panthers’ running, allowing a minus 7 yards on 22 carries.

The Pointers’ offense used their dynamic duo running backs Landon “Batman” Vance and Robert “Robin” Napier to combine for 187 yards. Vance ran 16 times for 93 yards and 3 touchdowns while Napier carried 10 times for 94 yards and he caught 2 passes for 39 yards and a score.

Quarterback Ethan Hunt was 5 of 11 for 87 yards to give the Pointers 291 total yards.

Chesapeake’s offense saw quarterback K.J. McLain hit 18 of 28 passes for 160 yards with 3 interceptions.

South Point came out strong on the first series of the game by going 68 yards in just 4 plays with the aid of two 15-yard penalties.

Vance had 3 big runs in the drive as he went 23, 16 and the final 6 yards for the touchdown Ezra Young kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

The Pointers’ defense came up with its first interception at the Panthers 30-yard line and on the ensuing play Hunt threw 30 yards to Davon Lewis who jumped up in front of the defensive back to make the catch at the goal line and scored for a 13-0 lead.

South Point failed to convert a fourth down play and the Panthers took over at the South Point 48.

McLain completed 4 straight passes to the 9-yard line and Easton Lewis ran for the touchdown to end the drive. The conversion kick failed and it was 13-6 at the half.

A bad snap over the punter’s head early in the second half gave the Pointers the ball at the Chesapeake 9-yard line.

Vance scored on the next play and Young’s conversion kick extended the lead to 20-6.

The Panthers had a punt go dead at the 13-yard line. The Chesapeake defense was able to sack Hunt for a 10-yard loss and then a bad snap caused Hunt to run out the back of the end zone for a safety and it was 26-8.

Another South Point interception gave the Pointers the ball at the 45. Hunt his Napier on a 31-yard catch and run to the 12-yard line. Two plays later, Hunt hit Napier on a swing pass and he ran into the end zone.

Young’s kick set the final score.

Next Friday, South Point entertains Coal Grove and Chesapeake is host to Gallia Academy in league games.
