Dragons trump Aces in shootout win, advance to district semis

PROCTORVILLE — Fairland's Brady Adkins put an end to their marathon match on Thursday night with a decisive goal in the shootout to give the Dragons a thrilling 9-8 win over the Amanda-Clearcreek Aces in the Division 4 district quarterfinals at Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium
Fairland took a 3-2 lead in the 61st minute off a goal from Kyle Salyers, but the Dragons wouldn't be able to hold the lead for very long.
In the 64th minute, Clearcreek's Joe Wilson evened the game up with a goal that would wind up sending the game into overtime.
Neither team could find the back of the net in two 15-minute overtime periods, leading to a shootout.
The teams went back and forth during the shoot out, with both teams successfully scoring on first 5 attempts. On the sixth round, the Aces missed their sixth attempt when the ball sailed just over the cross bar.
Now just one kick away from winning, Adkins stepped up to the line and put his shot into the left bottom corner for the win.
Fairland will now play Alexander at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the district semifinals at Zane Trace High School.
Alexander beat New Lexington 5-0 to advance.
