WILLOW WOOD — After suffering their first loss of the season, Symmes Valley needed to regroup and get back on track.
Well, the Vikings got back on track in a big way on Friday night by shutting out the East Tartans 47-0 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Friday night.
Quarterback Bronx Carpenter piled up 196 yards through the air in just one half of play. His top target Jackson Fields caught a game-high 6 balls for 94 yards, and hooked up with Carpenter for a 42-yard touchdown score in the second quarter.
Asher Maynard scored through the air and on the ground for the Vikings. Maynard opened up the scoring with a 9-yard run with 6:31 in the first quarter. Then Maynard and Carpenter connected in the second quarter for a 24-yard score to push the lead out to 26-0.
The defense turned in a lights-out performance, holding the Tartans to just 42 yards of offense and 4 first downs for the game.
Carpenter's second touchdown pass came with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame. From the East 10, Carpenter delivered a quick pass out to Gradee Holland and the junior receiver fought off two tacklers and pushed himself over the goal line for the score. Miguel Ferreira tacked on the extra point to make the score 14-0.
The scoring drive was set up by a Carpenter screen pass to Levi Russell for a 35-yard gain, where Russell cut back across the grain down to the East 20.
The Vikings (7-1, 2-1 SOC) capped off the first half scoring with Carpenter's third and final touchdown toss.
On first-and-goal from the 2, Carpenter took the snap and used his feet to buy time for Levi Russell to come open over the middle of the end zone, and Carpenter lined a pass to. Russell for the score. Ferreira added the extra point to put the Vikings ahead 33-0 at the break.
At the beginning of the second half, the Tartans (0-7, 0-3) managed a pair of first downs thanks to some tough runs from Bobby Bryant and Lindon Williams. But the drive was shut down when Jaxon Gates, Michael Weaver and a host of other red shirts combined to make a fourth down stop.
Five plays later, Jordan Nance found the end zone on a run to the corner pylon to push the lead out to 40-0.
In the fourth, Mason Adams shrugged off a tackle, then bobbed and weaved his way 18 yards to pay dirt for the final score of the night with 4:32 remaining in the game.
The Vikings face Notre Dame in their home finale next Friday. East returns home to face Green.
