FLATWOODS  — Six different Russell players found the end zone and the defense held firm again, as the Red Devils rolled past the Lewis County Lions 43-7 at Henry R. Evans Stadium/Ivan McGlone Field on Friday night.

All told, 10 different players ran the ball and six different players registered a pass reception. All those touches totaled up to help the Red Devils out gain the Lions 238-52 in total yards.

Defensively, the Red Devils smothered Lewis County, as the Lions finished with a minus 30 yards rushing for the game and just 2 first downs.

"We talked about it going into this game, was to make sure that we're doing what we're suppose to do," said Russell coach T.J. Maynard. "Read your keys, being physical, playing with hands, make the right blocks, get the right calls. And we weren't perfect in that tonight, but again we can't worry about our opponent, we have to worry about ourself and I think our kids did pretty at that tonight."

The Red Devils had to earn their way into the end zone on the opening drive, converting a 4th-and-12 and two 3rd-and-long plays to get on the board. The fourth down play turned out to be a huge gain, as Jayden Frasure threw a dart down the middle of the field to Caden Mitchell for 22 yards.

Frasure and Mitchell hooked up one more time, this time on a screen pass for the 6-yard score to cap the drive. Sam Totten came on and added the point after to make it 7-0.

"Biggest thing on that first drive was we prepared all week for an odd front and then (Lewis County) came out in a 4-front. So, we weren't making the right call up front and we took that timeout and told the kids to make the right call," said Maynard.

The Russell defense came up with a fourth down stop on the ensuing possession by Lewis County (0-7, 0-3 district). The Lions attempted to go for it from their own 39 by rolling out quarterback Aaden Bloomfield. But Bloomfield was swallowed up by Tate Smith for a sack for a turnover on downs.

Russell (6-1, 2-0) moved quickly down the field thanks to a 28-yard burst by Lane Osborne down to the Lions 8.

Two plays later, Kaiden Benge plowed in from a yard away for his first score of the night and Gavin Skaggs added the point after to extend the lead to 14-0 with 3:28 remaining in the opening frame.

Benge scored again with 3:13 remaining in the half on a 7 yard run to make the score 36-0 at the break.

Anderson Haggard capped off the first quarter scoring on a handoff on an end around and went virtually untouched the 14 yards for the touchdown.

Benjamin Brinkman finished off the first half scoring with his first touchdown of the season from 9 yards out to cap off the 4-play drive. Totten added the extra point to extend the lead to 29-0.

The rest of the scoring came in the fourth quarter.

Russell's final touchdown came when Hunter Williams scored from 3 yards out on a designed quarterback run to make the score 43-0.

The Lions showed no quit, finding a way to score on the final play from scrimmage.

Bloomfield rolled to his right and hit Jaidance Cottingham in stride down the home sideline for a 76-yard strike. Cameron Farris added the extra point to round out the final score.

Russell travels to Bath County next Friday. Lewis County returns home to face East Carter.
