Tiger offense gets needed help in win over Senators

PORTSMOUTH – A couple of defensive stalwarts added a little offense to their game.

Zayne Williams and Kayden Edwards are known for their defense, but they combined for 19 points as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Portsmouth West Senators 57-46 in the Buckeye Classic on Saturday.

Edwards scored 11 points and Williams had 8 to help Ashton Layne who had 19 points and Maddix Markel with 10 points.

Will Kegley had 19 points and Logan McIntire 16 for West (7-5).

Markel scored 6 points while Layne and Edwards scored 4 points each as Ironton (11-2) took a 19-12 first quarter lead.

Corbin Miller and Kegley had 4 each for West.

Williams came off the bench and drilled a pair of 3-pointers as he scored 8 points in the second quarter for Ironton and it was 32-28 at the half.

Kegley scored 9 and McIntire hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points as West narrow the deficit.

Layne and Edwards combined for all 11 of Ironton’s points in the third quarter and the lead was 43-37.

Kegley scored 6 points and McIntire hit a trey for the West scoring in the quarter.

Layne scored 9 points including 3 of 3 at the foul line and Ironton was 6 of 7 at the line in the quarter and the defense held Kegley scoreless in the quarter to preserve the win.
